January and February 2018 Report

This time I have made an exception and I am delivering both january and february 2018 in the same report. I basically started monitoring my life with more precision in january 2017. There is no way of doing real conclusions about how things are really working, yet. I have some goals for arranging my life and I am still far away from optimal. All the monthly reports are basically divided into two parts, mental and physical efforts and results.

I had some troubles, especially in February. I was sick for a week and most of my physical efforts were in the hold. All in all, I was less active with my physical effort in february. January was actually a pretty good month concerning on the physical effort.

Mental efforts and results in february and january

Most of my mental efforts go to using a laptop, watching TV and reading real books. For monitoring laptop usage, I have RescueTime program which shows how much time I use for using OpenOffice, reading Kindle books and flying through different websites, emails, etc. I do not measure my time watching TV, at least not yet. But I am timing how much I read physical non-fiction books. Here are some results of using laptop and reading physical books february (january)

  • Time I used my laptop/day on average: 286 (285) minutes/day
  • The efficiency on average with laptop 64% (59%) 183 min (168min)
  • Using OpenOffice/day 71 (65) min/day on average
  • Using Ebooks 60 (59) min/day on average
  • Refereeing portals on 7 (12min)/day on average
  • Online newspapers 6 min (10min/day) on average
  • keskustelu.kauppalehti.fi (Finnish financial news portal) 14 min (14 min/day) on avg
  • skysports.com 7 min (10 min)/day on average
  • Others: about 117 (105 min)/day on average
  • Reading physical books about 78min (92 min/day) on average

We can see that mental efforts TV excluded took a lot of my time, basically now it was more than 6 hours/day. I used my laptop almost 5h/day. The efficiency was 64% in february. It was clearly better than my 59% in january. Normal efficiency should be around 60% on average. It seems to me I have improved, but I am not sure if my new laptop has something do with it. I have a different browser in use now. This can explain something, because the RescueTime algorithm can see things differently. In february I read non-fiction about 78 minutes/day. And I read Ebooks about 60 min on average. In january the numbers were 90 and 59 minutes. I was sick for a week in February. That had an effect on how many normal books I could read. I didn´t have any books for some days.

Physical efforts

My division for physical efforts are sleeping, eating, drinking, walking and exercising. I did not sleep that well in November and it continued in December. I cannot really think any obvious reasons. I have no data to prove it. I have too much weight. I measured it in 28th and it was 100kg, which is the same weight than in the end of february. I am aiming weight under 100kg before summer. It may not happen, but close to it is better than nothing. I am very close, but also in the crossroads. I have had a week of not having enough exercice and I have to get back to the rhytm. Everything went pretty well, until I got a flu. I haven´t lost any weight for couple months and I hope I will not get back to my old habits.

My nutrition is still not good enough. I could eat better. The amount of crap has diminished a bit. I ate crap only in four days in february and january. I am not good in eating vegetables. My preferred food is whole wheat pasta and chicken. That is my main dish. I eat it almost every day. Most often my second dish for the day is this same whole wheat pasta with either red meat or fish. I havent been drinking any alcohol since the end of august. I am trying to have a whole alcohol free year. It is a challenge. I have sometimes been without alcohol for two or three months. I have managed to survive without it, at least for now. I am pretty confident I can manage a year without alcohol. I haven´t still decided what to do after the year. I may start drinking again, but very seldom. I am not sure yet. I will see what happens in august.

Exercising can be divided into two things: refereeing and walking. Refereeing should be my preferred way, but I am trying to have a short walk every day, if I have only one game. If I have more in one day, I may not go for a walk. February was a good month, until I got a flu. On average, I was on the move for 65 minutes per day. 90 minutes is my long-term goal. I was getting a little more than 80 minutes of exercise. Exercise was refereeing for two thirds of the time and walking one third of the time. In january I had about 76 minutes of exercise per day. It was divided between refereeing and walking about half and half.

I have some trouble in motivating myself to write this blog. I hope all the readers have patience to wait for these reviews.

Have a good month!

December 2017

This is my Deember´s monthly report about my progress with using latticework of mental models in my life. I basically started monitoring my life with more precision in january this year. There is no way of doing real conclusions about how things are really working, yet. I have some goals for arranging my life and I am still pretty far away from optimal. All the monthly reports are basically divided into two parts, mental and physical efforts and results.

I had no real change in December. All in all, I was less active with my mental and physical efforts in December than in other months this year. It was to be expected. Christmas has always been a time, when I have done nothing. This December was not an exception. It doesn´t mean I should have lived that way.

Mental efforts and results in November

Most of my mental efforts go to using a laptop, watching TV and reading real books. For monitoring laptop usage, I have RescueTime program which shows how much time I use for using OpenOffice, reading Kindle books and flying through different websites, emails, etc. I do not measure my time watching TV, at least not yet. But I am timing how much I read physical non-fiction books. Here are some results of using laptop and reading physical books from November (October)

  • Time I used my laptop/day on average: 266 (149) minutes/day
  • The efficiency on average with laptop 63% (52%) 135 min (135min)
  • Using OpenOffice/day 71 (29) min/day on average
  • Using Kindle 41 (41) min/day on average
  • Refereeing portals on 7 (7min)/day on average
  • Online newspapers 11 min (6min/day) on average
  • keskustelu.kauppalehti.fi (Finnish financial news portal) 16 min (9 min/day) on avg
  • skysports.com 6min (5 min)/day on average
  • Facebook 1min (3 min/day) on average
  • Others: about 51 (50 min)/day on average
  • Reading physical books about 90min (103 min/day) on average

We can see that mental efforts TV excluded took a lot of my time, basically now it was about 6 hours/day. I used my laptop about 4 and half hours per day. The efficiency was 63%. It was clearly better than my 56% in november. Normal efficiency should be around 60% on average. It seems to me I have improved, but I am not sure if my new laptop has something do with it. I have a different browser in use now. This can explain something. I have to see what happens in January. In December I read non-fiction about 90 minutes/day. I can probably read a little more, but I should be more focused than I am right now after a certain amount of reading. The quality of the non-fiction books I have read could be better.

Physical efforts

My division for physical efforts are sleeping, eating, drinking, walking and exercising. I did not sleep that well in November and it continued in December. I cannot really think any obvious reasons. I have no data to prove it. I have too much weight. I measured it in 31st of December and it was 102kg, which is the same weight than in the end of November. I am aiming weight under 100kg before summer. It may not happen, but close to it is better than nothing. My nutrition is not good enough. I eat too much crap. In December I ate crap in six days. (6 in November) The definition for crap is too much fat or sugar, or some foods with white flour. I am aiming to eat crap once a week. I like it and I don´t think it is too much.

I did not drink any alcohol in November. I am trying to have a whole alcohol free year, which started after my birthday celebrations in the end of august. It is a challenge. I have sometimes been without alcohol for two or three months. I have managed to survive without it, at least for now. I will probably have more difficulties during the pre-christmas parties.

Exercising can be divided into two things: refereeing and walking. Refereeing should be my preferred way, but I am trying to have a short walk every day, if I have only one game. If I have more in one day, I may not go for a walk. December was not a good month. On average, I was on the move for 60 minutes per day. 90 minutes is my long-term goal. Exercise was refereeing for two half the time and walking half the time. I should exercise little more every month timewise. Exercise could be lot harder. I don´t believe in any tricks. Hopefully, I can manage all the changes gradually without major setbacks. I am not perfect and I must to expect bad progress at some point of time.

I have some trouble in motivating myself to write this blog. I hope all the readers have patience.

Have a good month!

November 2017

This is my November´s monthly report about my progress with using latticework of mental models in my life. I basically started monitoring with more precision in january this year. There is no way of doing real conclusions about how things are really working, yet. I have some goals for arranging my life and I am still pretty far away from optimal. All the monthly reports are basically divided into two parts, mental and physical efforts and results.

I had an accident with my laptop in november. I broke it with lots of liquid on it. I had some back up copies about files, but not for all of them. What really happened is that I could not read any Kindle books, or write any notes from the books I read. I had to read paper books instead and stop writing any notes about them. It took about ten days to get a new laptop to start doing my things again with it. Otherwise, I had no real change in November. All in all, I was less active with my mental and physical efforts in November than in other months this autumn. I will probably continue posting to my blog next tuesday on 12th of December.

Mental efforts and results in November

Most of my mental efforts go to using a laptop, watching TV and reading real books. The latter things are separate, because I also use my laptop for reading Kindle-books.

  • Time I used my laptop/day on average: 149 (264) minutes/day
  • The efficiency on average with laptop 52% (52%) 135 min (135min)
  • Using OpenOffice/day 29 (52) min/day on average
  • Using Kindle 41 (66) min/day on average
  • Refereeing portals on 7 (10min)/day on average
  • Online newspapers 6 min (15min/day) on average
  • keskustelu.kauppalehti.fi (Finnish financial news portal) 9 min (16 min/day) on avg
  • skysports.com 5min (2 min)/day on average
  • Facebook 3min (13 min/day) on average
  • Others: about 50 (90 min)/day on average
  • Reading physical books about 103min (90 min/day) on average

We can see that mental efforts TV excluded took a lot of my time, basically now it was about 4 hours/day. I used my laptop about 4 and half hours per day. The efficiency should be better than my 56% in october. Normal efficiency should be around 60% on average. There is two ways to improve: less crappy action and more efficient action like reading Kindle books more and using OpenOffice more. In october I read non-fiction about 156 minutes/day. I can probably read a little more, but I should be more focused than I am right now after a certain amount of reading. The quality of the non-fiction books I have read could be better. Many books that I have read do not offer enough added value.

Physical efforts

My division for physical efforts are sleeping, eating, drinking, walking and exercising. I did not sleep that well in November. I cannot really think any obvious reasons. I have no data to prove it. I have too much weight. I measured it in 30th of November and it was 102kg, which is one kilogram less than in the end of October. I am aiming weight under 100kg in the end of this year. It may not happen, but close to it is better than nothing. This will definitely not happen, because christmas is coming, which probably means less exercise and eating more unhealthy food. My nutrition is not good enough. I eat too much crap. November was a better month than September. I ate crap in six days. (7 in September) The definition for crap is too much fat or sugar, or some foods with white flour.

September was a pretty good month. On average, I was on the move almost for 70 minutes per day. 90 minutes is my goal. Exercise was refereeing for two thirds of the time and walking one third of the time. I should exercise little more every month timewise. Exercise could be lot harder. I don´t believe in any tricks. Hopefully, I can manage all the changes gradually without major setbacks. I am not perfect and I must to expect bad progress at some point of time.

There is no way of doing real conclusions about how things are really working. I have some goals for arranging my life and I am still pretty far away from optimal. All the monthly reports are basically divided into two parts, mental and physical efforts and results.

Mental efforts and results in October 2017

Most of my mental efforts go to using a laptop, watching TV and reading real books. The latter things are separate, because I also use my laptop for reading Kindle-books. For monitoring laptop usage, I have RescueTime program which shows how much time I use for using OpenOffice, reading Kindle books and flying through different websites, emails, etc. I do not measure my time watching TV, at least not yet. • Facebook 13min (13 min/day) on average
  • Others: about 90 (70 min)/day on average
  • Reading physical books about 90min (97 min/day) on average

We can see that mental efforts TV excluded take a lot of my time, basically now it is about 6 hours/day. October was a little bit hard for me. At least, mentally speaking. I used my laptop about 4 and half hours per day. The efficiency should be better than my 53% in october. There has been a little change towards reading Kindle. I still like physical books more.

Physical efforts

My division for physical efforts are sleeping, eating, drinking, walking and exercising. I slept pretty well for the whole month of October. I have no data to prove it. I have too much weight. I measured it in 31st of ocber and it was 103kg, which is two kilograms less than in the end of September. I am aiming weight under 100kg in the end of this year. I have sometimes been without alcohol for two or three months. I have managed to survive without it, at least for now. I will probably have more difficulties during the pre-christmas parties. I didn´t have any problems with alcohol in October. I am sure I can manage Novermber too.

Exercising can be divided into two things: refereeing and walking. Refereeing should be my preferred way, but I am trying to have a short walk every day, if I have only one game. If I have more in one day, I may not go for a walk. September was a pretty good month. On average, I was on the move almost for 80 minutes per day. 90 minutes is my goal. Tommi´s almanack monthly report september 2017

This is my september´s monthly report about my progress with using latticework of mental models in my life. I basically started monitoring with more precision in january this year. There is no way of doing real conclusion about how things are really working. I have some goals for arranging my life and I am still pretty far away from optimal life. All the monthly reports are basically divided into two parts, mental and physical efforts and results.

Mental efforts and results in september 2017

Most of my mental efforts go to using a laptop, watching TV and reading real books. The latter things are separate, because I also use my laptop for reading Kindle-books. For monitoring laptop usage, I have RescueTime program which shows how much time I use for using OpenOffice, reading Kindle books and flying through different websites, emails, etc. I do not measure my time watching TV, at least not yet. But I am timing how much I read physical non-fiction books. Here are some results of using laptop and reading physical books from september (August):

  • Time I used my laptop/day on average: 242 (275) minutes/day
  • The efficiency on average with laptop 56% (50%) 135 min (137min)
  • Using OpenOffice/day 52 (57) min/day on average
  • Using Kindle 61 (42) min/day on average
  • Refereeing portals on 11 (11min)/day on average
  • Online newspapers 15min (16min/day) on average
  • keskustelu.kauppalehti.fi (Finnish financial news portal) 14min (19 min/day) on avg
  • skysports.com 4min (13 min)/day on average
  • Facebook 13min (15 min/day) on average
  • Others: about 70 (100 min)/day on average
  • Reading physical books about 97min (90 min/day) on average

We can see that mental efforts TV excluded take a lot of my time, basically now it is about 5 and a half hours/day. We cannot really see this, but september was a pretty average month to me. At least, mentally speaking. I used my laptop about 4 hours per day. This is what I achieved in september. The efficiency should be better than my 56% in september.. Normal efficiency should be around 60% on average. There is two ways to improve: less crappy action and more efficient action like reading Kindle books more and using OpenOffice more. In september I read non-fiction about 150 minutes/day. I can probably read a little more, but I should be more focused than I am right now after a certain amount of reading.

Physical efforts

My division for physical efforts are sleeping, eating, drinking, walking and exercising. I slept pretty well for the whole month of August. I have no data to prove it. I have too much weight. I measured it in 30th of september and it was 105kg, which is one kilogram less than in the end of august. One kilogram is nothing, it can be a difference in hydration while I was on the scale. I am aiming weight under 100kg in the end of this year. It may not happen, but close to it is better than nothing. 90Kg would be better, but it takes longer. My nutrition is not good enough. I eat too much crap. September was a better month than august. I ate crap in seven days. (10x in August) The definition for crap is too much fat and sugar, or some foods with white flour. I am aiming to eat crap once a week. I like it and I don´t think it is too much.

I drank alcohol once, but way too much. I am trying to have a whole alcohol free year, which started after my birthday celebrations in the end of august. It is a challenge. I have sometimes been without alcohol for two or three months. I have managed to survive without it, at least for now. I will probably have more difficulties during the pre-christmas parties. I didn´t have any problems with alcohol in september. I am sure I can manage october too.

Exercising can be divided into two things: refereeing and walking. Refereeing should be my preferred way, but I am trying to have a short walk every day, if I have only one game. If I have more in one day, I may not go for a walk. September was a pretty good month. On average, I was on the move for 70 minutes per day. 90 minutes is my goal. Exercise was refereeing for 40 minutes and walking 30 minutes on average per day. My goal is to exercise from 80-90 minutes per day at some point.

Have a good month!

Tommis Almanack Monthly report August 2017

This is my first monthly report about my progress with using latticework of mental models in my life. I basically started monitoring with more precision in january this year. There is no way of doing real conclusion about how things are really working. I have some goals for arranging my life and I am still pretty far away from optimal life. All the monthly reports are basically divided into two parts, mental and physical efforts and results.

Mental efforts and results in August 2017

Most of my mental efforts go to using a laptop, watching TV and reading real books. The latter things is separate, because I also use my laptop for reading Kindle-books. For monitorin laptop usage, I have RescueTime program which shows how much time I use for using OpenOffice, reading Kindle books and flying through different websites, emails, etc. I do not measure my time watching TV, at least not yet. But I am timing how much I read physical non-fiction books. Here are some results of using laptop and reading physical books from August:

  • Time I used my laptop/day on average: 275 minutes/day
  • The efficiency on average with laptop 50% (about137min) provided by RescueTime
  • Using OpenOffice/day 57 min/day on average
  • Using Kindle 42 min/day on average
  • Refereeing portals on 11min/day on average
  • Online newspapers 16min/day on average
  • keskustelu.kauppalehti.fi (Finnish financial news portal) 19 min/day on average
  • skysports.com 13 min/day on average
  • Facebook 15 min/day on average
  • Rest: about 100 min/day on average
  • Reading physical books about 90 min/day on average

We can see that mental efforts TV excluded take a lot of my time, basically now it is about 6 hours/day. We cannot really see this, but August was a pretty average month to me. At least, mentally speaking. I can see some room for improvement. I shouldn´t use my laptop more during my days. Hopefully I can use it less in the coming months. A proper goal would be about four hours/day. And the efficiency should be better. Normal efficiency should be around 60% on average. There is two ways to improve: less crappy action and more efficient action like reading Kindle books more and using OpenOffice more. I can read non-fiction books about 3h/day and that is pretty much the limit for me right now.

Physical efforts

My division for physical efforts are sleeping, eating, drinking, walking and exercising. I slept pretty well for the whole month of August. I have no data to prove it. I have too much weight. I measured it in 31th of August and it was 106kg. I am aiming weigh under 100kg in the end of this year. 90Kg would be better, but it takes longer. My nutrition is not good enough. I eat too much crap. August was a bad month. I ate crap in ten days. The definition for crap is too much fat and sugar, or some foods with white flour. I am aiming to eat crap once a week. I like it and I don´t think it is too much. I drank alcohol once, but way too much. I am trying to have a whole alcohol free year, which started after my birthday celebrations. It is a challenge. I have sometimes been without alcohol for two or three months.

Exercising can be divided into two things: refereeing and walking. Refereeing should be my preferred way, but I am trying to have a short walk every day, if I have only one game. If I have more in one day, I may not go for a walk. August was a bad month, because I hurt my thigh and my exercise was mostly walking. On average I was on the move for 57 minutes per day. Which is not good enough. Especially, when exercise was mostly walking. September looks better and probably will be better. I am aiming to exercise from 80-90 minutes per day at some point.

Daily schedule/habits

I have tried to automate my days, but I haven´t completely succeeded yet. I have a simple daily schedule with some variation. This schedule works from monday to friday for most of the days. Sometime I may have refereeing in the morning or afternoon and then my schedule will be very different, but otherwise it is simple.

I wake up normally between 8am and 10am. Sometimes even before 8am. Normally I have no alarm and I sleep as much as I can. After waking up, I drink my morning coffee. This normally takes about half an hour. Then I start reading a normal non-fiction book. Which takes about 45-60 minutes before I start having breakfast. After breakfast, I continue reading until I have read 90-120 minutes. I have at least one short break if I read more than 90 minutes. Depending on the time I have awaken, I will read Kindle book or start preparing my lunch. After lunch I may go to buy some groceries, but that does happen maybe once a week. Then I will continue with either reading Kindle or I write until four o´clock. Unfortunately, this is an ideal way, but I do have some distractions during the day and especially after lunch. After 4pm, I may go to buy some groceries, go for a walk or have some refereeing. Otherwise, I will read a crime novel or watch TV before going to bed.

This is how I normally live my life. A lot of things are habits that do not really change. Sometimes there is some variation how everything goers together. Weekends are different and I have more refereeing than from monday to friday. I can do everything more efficiently and hopefully I can manage improving all the time. Monthly reports are for tracking improvement and this report is what it typically looks like.

Monitoring progress in using mental models introduced in tommisalmanack.

I need to monitor the things I do by using the latticework of mental models to get the right picture about my progress. This blog is only for introducing to people how to use mental models in daily life and keeping track to myself what I have actually done. I will monitor my progress every day, but I will tell what I have done only once a month. I will also give reports about the first and second half of the year.

These reports will show people at least the time at my laptop, the sites I have visited the most, how productive my time with the computer has been. (I have been monitoring it by using RescueTime, which has an algorithm I don´t know of.)

I will also tell you how much time I have used for reading. I will also have a list about all the non-fiction books I have read and taken notes. I may give some comments about some of them, but I am not going to write any reviews. I have noticed lots of differences about the quality of the books. Even the most popular authors may have serious flaws in understanding how things really work. I probably have the same problem, but at least I am noticing it and learning constantly.

I have started measuring physical things like eating, exercising, walking during the day, weight, etc. I haven´t yet started to measure my sleep. First I need to adjust to monitoring many other things and I also need an instrument to track my sleep. This I will probably start at the end of the year, probably in december. Physical improvement like losing weight will probably take about a year. I trust the power of compounding. Small improvements will probably start having effects later.

My plan is to keep on monitoring things for the next five years. I will also measure success in a five year period. I am not quaranteeing doing that, but I hope that will be the case.
